Could your Beagle Benefit from Agility Classes?

Beagle Agility Classes

One of our members Becky tells us how she started Beagle agility with her dog Alfie and why they enjoy it so much.....

A friend of ours, also a member of the Facebook group BeaglesUK posted an event - "A one off all beagle Agility session"  At first we were a little unsure, as anyone who owns a beagle knows they're not always that great off-lead and if they get a sniff of something remotely interesting, well you can forget about jumps, weaving poles and tunnels but once I had the assurance that it was all totally enclosed I felt a bit more positive towards the idea - so we had a brief discussion about it and accepted the invite!!

14th April was our first Beagle Agility Session; what a fantastic afternoon we got there helped set all of the equipment up, then the very first thing we had to do was find a space and stand with our beagles get them to sit and stay whilst we walked around them, this was just to gain some control, next we all lined up and took it in turns to get the beagles to sit in front of the tunnel and wait as we then dropped the leads, stood at the other end of the tunnel and gave them the command "through" and then run to the other end of the tunnel and do your best to catch you dog sometimes easier said than done. Once everyone had, had a few goes it was time to practice the jumps.   The Jumps are definately Alfie's favourite part of the course - he loves jumping full stop whether that be in the garden or out on walks, then we had a go with the weaving poles. One fantastic thing with agility is, it channels all of that excess energy - the session lasted for 1 hour and I can honestly say Alfie didn't move far that night and that is quite something for him. Anyway we enjoyed it so much we asked if there would ever be another session, there wasn't one beagle who didn't enjoy it!!

A few weeks later my friend got in touch Beagle Agility session number 2 was going ahead and we of course were really happy - Well that was the 12th May and we had so much fun - 14 beagles turned up in total all very well behaved all thoroughly enjoyed what they had to do, helps having pockets full of treats too...

We were so impressed by Alfie's concentration and enthusiasm to do the obstacle's especially as he was off lead that I think we've been bitten by the Agility bug - Watch this space........

I would highly recommend a bit of fun agility, if your dog likes that sort of thing and has lots of energy.  Agility however isn't suitable for dogs under the age of 18 months due to their joints still developing!!

If you wish to get involded check out your local agility group for classes near you.
